What is query fan-out? How AI search expands one question into many
By Anis Harbaoui, SEO specialist
Query fan-out is a technique used by AI search systems that splits one question into several related sub-queries, runs them in parallel and combines the results into a single answer. Google has described it as part of AI Mode and AI Overviews. For publishers it means a page is judged not only against the words someone typed, but against the sub-questions behind them.

- AI systems may break one question into many sub-queries and answer from the pages that cover them.
- A page that answers the main question and its likely follow-ups has more chances of being used.
- Use clear question headings and short, direct answers.
- Link related pages so each sub-question has a home on your site.
What is query fan-out?
Take the question “best WordPress SEO plugin for a small shop”. An AI search feature may turn it into several searches: which features a small shop needs, how free and paid plans differ, how well each plugin handles WooCommerce, and how hard it is to migrate. It then gathers sources for each one and writes a combined answer.
Google describes how its AI features choose and show sources in its guidance on AI features and your website. The exact sub-queries and the way sources are selected are not public.
How does query fan-out work?
- The system reads the question and works out the sub-topics it covers.
- It searches for each sub-topic, often at the same time.
- It collects passages from the pages that answer each one.
- It combines them into one response and shows some of the sources.
That is why a page can be used for a sub-question even when it does not rank first for the main query.
Why does query fan-out matter for your content?
Ranking for the main query is no longer the only way into an answer. A page that clearly covers one sub-question well can be cited for it. A page that covers the main topic only in broad strokes may not be picked for any of them. Nobody can guarantee citations, but complete, well-structured pages give you more chances.
How do you write content for query fan-out?
- List the sub-questions: what it is, how it works, the steps, the cost, the problems and the alternatives.
- Turn each one into a heading phrased as a question, and answer it in the first sentence under it.
- Add a short FAQ for the follow-ups. See how to mark up FAQ content.
- Give deeper sub-questions their own page and link to it.
- Keep facts specific and current, with dates and named sources.
How do you find the sub-questions?
Use search autocomplete, People Also Ask boxes, your own support emails and forum threads. You can also ask an AI assistant your main question and note which sub-topics it covers. NexalSEO’s editor panel suggests related questions for your focus keyword, which gives you a starting list.
Frequently asked questions
Is query fan-out a ranking factor?
No. It describes how some AI search features gather information. It is not a score you can optimise directly.
Do I need to change my SEO strategy?
Mostly you need complete, well-structured pages that answer the follow-up questions. That is good SEO anyway.
Does Google publish how fan-out works?
Google has described the technique at a high level, but the exact sub-queries and source selection are not public.
How does it relate to topical authority?
Topical authority is about covering a subject across a site. Query fan-out is one reason that coverage matters in AI answers: each sub-question needs a page that answers it.
