AI Overviews and AI search: how to get a WordPress site cited
By Anis Harbaoui, SEO specialist
AI answer engines such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search and Perplexity build answers from pages they can crawl, understand and trust, and cite some of those pages as sources. Getting cited depends on the same foundations as SEO, plus three extras: crawler access, self-contained answers and a clear entity identity.

- AI Overviews draw on Google’s index; ChatGPT Search and Copilot rely heavily on Bing’s index.
- Allow the AI search crawlers you want in robots.txt; blocking training crawlers is a separate decision.
- Write passages that answer one question completely in the first sentences.
- There is no proven “AI ranking factor” tag: structure and clarity are what help.
How AI answer engines choose sources
| Engine | Main index | Crawler(s) to allow |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews / AI Mode | Google Search index | Googlebot (Google-Extended only controls Gemini training and grounding) |
| ChatGPT Search | Bing index plus OpenAI crawling | OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing index | Bingbot |
| Perplexity | Own index and live fetches | PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User |
| Claude | Search provider plus live fetches | Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User |
Crawler names change; check each provider’s documentation before editing robots.txt.
Checklist: make your site citable
Be indexed in Google and Bing
Submit sitemaps in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Allow AI search crawlers
In robots.txt, allow the search crawlers above. GPTBot (training) can be blocked without affecting ChatGPT Search.
Serve content in HTML
Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript; main text and JSON-LD must be in the initial HTML.
Answer first
Open each section with a 40–60 word answer that makes sense out of context.
Use tables and lists
Comparisons and procedures are easy to extract and quote.
Show freshness
Visible “last updated” dates and accurate dateModified.
Make the entity clear
Consistent brand name, Organization schema and sameAs; see entity SEO explained.
Earn third-party mentions
Answer engines lean on consensus: reviews, comparisons and community discussions matter.
What does not (yet) have evidence
- A specific schema type that guarantees AI citations.
- llms.txt explained as a ranking or citation signal.
- Rewriting content in “AI style” or stuffing question phrases.
Treat these as optional experiments, not foundations.
How to measure AI visibility
- In GA4, create a channel for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com.
- Keep a fixed list of 20 prompts relevant to your business and check monthly whether you are cited.
- In Search Console, AI Overviews traffic is included in Web search performance; watch impressions on informational queries.

Frequently asked questions
Can I block AI training but stay in AI search?
Mostly yes: for OpenAI, block GPTBot and allow OAI-SearchBot. For Google, Google-Extended does not affect Search or AI Overviews.
Does schema markup help AI Overviews?
It helps Google understand pages, which AI Overviews rely on, but there is no evidence that schema alone increases citations.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
For many informational queries they can. Being cited as a source is the way to stay visible.
