What is semantic SEO? Entities, context and topical authority

By Anis Harbaoui, SEO specialist

Semantic SEO is the practice of optimizing content for meaning rather than for individual keywords: covering the entities, attributes and questions that make up a topic, and connecting them so search engines recognise your site as an authority. It reflects how modern search works: Google matches concepts and relationships, not strings.

Key takeaways
  • Search engines model the web as entities (things) and relationships, not keywords.
  • Topical authority comes from covering a topic completely and linking the pieces logically.
  • Each page should answer one intent fully; the site as a whole should cover the topic.
  • Structured data and internal links make the semantic structure explicit.

From keywords to entities

Since the Knowledge Graph launched in 2012 and with later systems such as BERT and MUM, Google has moved from matching words to understanding things. An entity is a uniquely identifiable thing, such as WordPress, a company or a concept like schema markup, with attributes (WordPress is written in PHP) and relationships (a plugin runs on WordPress). Semantic SEO organizes content around those entities so that both people and machines understand it without guessing.

The core concepts

Topical map

A plan of every page needed to cover a topic, organised from a central entity (the core) to its attributes (sub-topics) and peripheral questions (outer topics). Our guides hub is built this way.

Source context

The angle that makes a site’s perspective unique. For NexalSEO, it is “the plugin company that makes WordPress sites understandable through entities”. Every page should fit that angle.

Information gain

The new information a page adds compared with what already ranks: original data, a clearer method, a worked example. Pages that only restate the consensus have little reason to be ranked above it.

Contextual coverage

Answering the questions a reader naturally asks next, in the order they would ask them, inside one coherent page.

A practical semantic SEO checklist

Define the central entity

What the site is about, in one noun phrase.

List its attributes

Features, use cases, problems solved, integrations, comparisons.

Map one page per intent

Avoid two pages competing for the same question.

Open each page with a direct answer

A definition or answer in the first 40–60 words.

Link related pages contextually

Child pages link to their parent; siblings link when they share an entity. See internal linking.

Make entities explicit

Use schema with about, mentions and sameAs. See entity SEO explained.

Refresh and expand

Add pages as new questions appear; update facts that change.

Frequently asked questions

Is semantic SEO different from topical authority?

Topical authority is the outcome; semantic SEO is the method of building content around entities and intents that produces it.

Do I still need keywords?

Yes, to understand how people phrase their questions. But a page is planned around an intent and its entities, not around a keyword density.

How long does topical authority take?

It depends on competition, but sites usually see clusters rank together only after most of a topic is covered and interlinked.
