How to measure AI citations and AI search traffic
By Anis Harbaoui, SEO specialist
AI citations are the links and source mentions that AI assistants and AI search features show when they answer a question using your content. There is no single dashboard for them, so measuring them takes three things together: a fixed set of test prompts, referral data in your analytics and the search data Google already gives you. This guide gives you a simple monthly routine.

- Run a fixed list of prompts each month and record whether your domain is cited and which URL.
- Track AI referral sources in your analytics.
- Google says traffic from its AI features is counted in the Search Console performance data.
- Answers change between runs, so look at trends rather than single results.
What counts as an AI citation?
| Type | What it looks like | Easy to measure? |
|---|---|---|
| Link citation | Your page appears as a clickable source | Yes |
| Brand mention | Your name appears in the answer without a link | Yes, by reading answers |
| Unattributed use | Your content shapes the answer but you are not named | No |
How do AI citations work?
When an AI tool answers a question it retrieves pages, picks passages that fit and shows some of them as sources. Which pages it picks depends on the tool, the wording of the prompt and the moment you ask. That is why the same question can show different sources from one run to the next.
How do you test whether AI tools cite your site?
- Write 20 to 50 prompts a real customer would ask, covering your main topics.
- Run each one in the AI tools your customers use, in a fresh session without personalised history.
- Record the date, the tool, whether your domain is cited, which URL and which competitors appear.
- Run each prompt two or three times, because answers vary.
- Repeat monthly and compare.
How do you track AI referral traffic in analytics?
In Google Analytics 4, open the traffic acquisition report by session source. Visits from AI assistants often show up as referrals from domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. Group them into one custom channel so you can follow the trend. Some visits arrive without a referrer and are counted as direct, so these numbers will undercount.
What does Search Console show about AI features?
Google says clicks and impressions from its AI features are included in the Search Console performance report under the web search type. Check Google’s documentation on AI features for the current reporting options, because they change.
What should you change if you are not cited?
- Answer the question in the first sentence under the heading.
- Add specific numbers, dates and named sources.
- Strengthen entity signals, as described in our guide to entity SEO.
- Check that your robots.txt is not blocking the crawlers of tools you want citations from.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see which AI tool sent a visit?
Often yes. Analytics shows the referring domain for many assistants, but some visits arrive with no referrer and appear as direct.
How many prompts should I track?
Twenty to fifty prompts that mirror real customer questions are enough to show a trend.
Why does the same prompt give different citations?
AI answers are generated each time and can draw on different sources. Run each prompt a few times and look at the pattern.
Do I need a paid tool?
No. A spreadsheet and a monthly routine give you a usable baseline. Paid trackers automate the same steps.
